In 1870, Sam Livingston was the first recorded settler in Calgary. The location where he settled became a
station for the North West Mounted Police in 1875. The town began to grow when a rail station was built for the Canadian Pacific
Railway. It was beginning to grow into an important agricultural and commercial centre.
Calgary officially became a town in 1884 and George Murdoch was chosen to be the town’s first mayor. In 1914 Oil was discovered
in Alberta, however only until the 1960’s when massive amounts of it were discovered did it become an important industry to the
province. Calgary had become the centre of the oil boom and the economy grew so quickly as the oil prices increased. The population
increased by almost 250,000 during the years between 1970 and 1986. The humble downtown area developed with skyscrapers and tall
buildings quicker than most other cities.
Due to the fall of the energy sector in the early 1980’s the unemployment rate soared but by the end of the decade the economy
started to regain its power. The town realized that it could not put so much dependency on the oil and gas industry and since
then the city has become both economically and culturally diverse.
Due to Calgary being the host city for the XV Olympic Winter Games of 1988, the city transformed from a lesser-known prairie city
into a metropolitan centre. The economy today is booming and the city continues to grow in all areas.
A lively, metropolitan city with over one million residents who enjoy amazing outdoor adventures and beautiful wildlife that is
just moments away to the Canadian Rockies. Calgary is one of Alberta’s most visited cities with nearly 5 million tourists every year.
They come to enjoy the city’s cultural diversity, diverse restaurants, parks and pathways, shops and bars and clubs.
With a wide open blue sky, rolling foothills, and moderate climate it attract's visitors from all around to golf, hike, fish,
mountain bike, ski, or even dog sled.
If the beautiful landscape doesn’t pull you in then the great shopping resources will. Alberta is the only province in Canada
to have no provincial sales tax. The Western heritage and legendary hospitality makes Calgary a welcoming city.
